Schools & Colleges

Picture
The HOCA Practice has many years experience in delivering a wide variety of schools and colleges, ranging from Foundation Bases at Primary Level, through to Colleges for Further and Adult Education.

Since inception we quickly recognised the importance of image for the school and college.

Where the same is lacking, due primarily to the age of the existing buildings, we engage with the school and all stakeholders to ensure the personality of the teaching and learning environments are enhanced.

Project Phasing - Working In Occupied School Buildings

HOCA prepare design solutions which include carefully considered phasing of the construction works. We recognise that not all work can be carried out during holiday times and therefore seek to accommodate the complexities of construction within occupied areas of the school.

In order to achieve a working arrangement for the school and the constructor a Phasing Plan is produced. This sets out the sequence of activities that the constructor is required to achieve. HOCA will also consider other innovative solutions including specific enabling works at strategic times to facilitate the overall project activities.

Design Out Temporary Buildings

We will always endeavour to design out the need to introduce temporary buildings which are an expensive addition to the project cost. This is achieved at the initial Feasibility Stage by examining the design options which negates the need for this requirement in the first place.

The impact of these design decisions can have significant cost implications for the project. The Phasing of the works is set out in the Phasing Plan to demonstrate how the various parts of the school or college can be made available for the works and still permit teaching and leaning functions to continue.

Delivering Value Engineering - Designing for Optimum Value

In examining design options for our projects, HOCA draws upon their in-house knowledge and expertise in relation to Off-Site Manufacture (OSM) and modular building design.

We are able to produce design solutions that capitalise on the principals of modularity, and at the same time produce bespoke design solutions that adhere to the principals of sustainability.

This is achieved in parallel with maintaining particular emphasis on the provision of quality teaching and the learning environment.

Outdoor Spaces for Education

Particular attention is directed towards the design of outside spaces and our creation of spaces for educational use. This is undertaken by adhering to the main principals contained within BB71 - "The Outdoor Classroom".

Maintaining Play Space

HOCA adhere to the requirements set out in BB28. A balance is sought in our design options that demonstrate a balance between the demand for internal teaching spaces against the importance and significance for external play spaces, also as a learning experience.

Designing for Acoustics

HOCA incorporate acoustic treatments to the ceiling within the new teaching and learning spaces in accordance with BB93 "Acoustic Design for Schools". Special consideration is also given to the creation of new larger volume spaces and refurbishment of Main Halls so as to reduce the reverberation sound within the hall space itself.

Natural Daylight

This is a feature that HOCA emphasise in their design solutions for the educational projects. We are also aware of the design requirements dictated by BREEAM and continue to succeed in delivering projects with a minimum rating of "Very Good".

The HOCA Practice made imaginative proposals about content and extended use of the building, which are helping with both capital and revenue funding of the project.  In this sense The HOCA Practice is able both to respond to needs and to anticipate client's needs .....
