Lead Design / Management & Coordination

Picture
In order to achieve our aim of producing high quality architectural solutions with rigor and care, it is essential that a systematic approach is adopted for each project.

This starts with the definition of the project parameters which record the nature of the project, size, programme and the staff that will be involved.

We also set out the nature and extent of services to be provided on the project and confirm these back to the client as part of our appointment.  On larger projects a specific management strategy is developed which sets out the approach to be adopted with respect to both design and CAD issues. This is updated accordingly as the project proceeds.

Design Process

The design process to be adopted will depend on the nature of the project itself but will usually follow, as far as possible, the work stages 'A' to 'M' of the RIBA Plan of Work.

This disciplines the design process and allows us to co-ordinate the input of other members of the design team.

Project Reviews

As the project proceeds, regular reviews are held with the Senior Project Architect and his support team in order to test concepts and solutions, and to ensure that the project is both moving forward and developing in an appropriate way.

The Principal of the Practice holds a watching brief on all projects and weekly meetings are held with the senior project team to review progress and practice procedures.

Checking Procedure

A key aspect of our approach to quality is the checking procedure which is implemented on all projects.

The check is initiated within the definition of the project parameters, at which time the type of check is allocated. This will depend on the size and nature of the project.

Generally, projects are checked on completion of the scheme design stage.

A second check review is held on completion of tender information to ensure that the principles set out earlier in the design have been followed through and that adequate drawings, schedules, specifications, and supporting documents have been produced.

Design Strategy.

A holistic design strategy evolves from careful consideration of the accommodation brief and assessment of site information.

The initial approach will take account not only of the "facts on the ground" but also of the Client Group's wider aspirations for the proposed building. The Design Team would make the new buildings "work hard" to achieve the optimum use of space.

Studies will establish community use options and potential community partners can be brought into the frame at this stage where appropriate and as part of the Client strategy. The building will be fully integrated in its landscape which will be planned to provide easily accessible outdoor spaces for sensory stimulation, social and recreational use.

Although the proposed design and finishes are in distinct context to existing finishes and detailing, the contemporary designs are respectful to the scale of the existing building particularly in the front elevation which maintains a horizontal emphasis .....
